Bevill St. Fayette

The 2006-2007 Bevill State-Fayette Men?s Basketball will be recognized on the evening of January 17, 2008, prior to the basketball game against Wallace State-Hanceville. The team members from last season will be in attendance to celebrate last year?s state championship season. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m. with the ceremony beginning prior to warm-ups. The state championship was the fifth in nine years for Bevill State-Fayette, with this being the first while competing on the Division I level.
The Bears entered last season?s ACCC Tournament as the fourth seeded team. In dominating fashion, Bevill State?Fayette completed a four day sweep, defeating Chattahoochee Valley Community College in the tournament final by a score of 61-50. Overall in the tournament, the Bears outscored their opponents by an average of 13.3 points per game.
In all, eight players from last year?s team went on to play at four-year colleges. Deandre Coleman signed to play at the University of South Alabama. Coleman currently leads the Sun Belt Conference in rebounding. Tom Jervis is currently playing at Troy University. A pair of players in Antonio Benjamin and Quinton Smith signed with Ouachita Baptist in Arkansas. Oliver Mansour signed to play with Division II power Delta State while Jerry Prudhomme continues his playing career at Northeast New Mexico State. Charles Thompson signed with the University of New Albany and Mike Robinson went on to Auburn University-Montgomery after leaving Bevill State-Fayette.
Coach Paul Johnson credits experience and unselfishness to the success of the season. ?We had a team full of experienced players,? Johnson said. They had been through the fire and knew what to expect. They put the goals of the team before personal gains. Our motto all year was to go 1-0 each game. The guys bought into this way of thinking and ultimately it paid off.?
