What started out as a slow season has finally picked up speed for the Bevill State volleyball team as the Lady Bears defeated Jefferson Davis Community College last Tuesday on the road and won three of four matches at the Pirate Invitational held in Milton, Florida, over the weekend.
Their win brings their stand to 7-5 on the year.
The news was good from the beginning against Jeff State when Bevill State (4-4) won the first match 30-17 and continued their winning streak through the second and third sets, winning 30-21, 30-14.
The team knocked down 41 kills, with Bridgett Marlowe leading the squad with 12 and Ashley Hughes following with 9.
Sheena Fletcher led the defense in digs with 17, while Julie Phillips was not far behind with 14. Nikki Jeffries was tops in assists with 20, followed by Stacie Hayes with 11, while Fletcher was the team leader in blocks with three.
Bevill State?s winning streak continued at the Pirate Invitational tournament, with the Lady Bears defeating Birmingham?s Lawson State 30-19, 30-9; St. John?s River, Fla., 21-30, 30-26, 15-9; and Pensacola Christian College 30-9, 30-26. The team tied for second place.
Bevill State fell to tournament winner Hillsboro Community College of Tampa 30-14, 30-21, making Bevill State 7-5 overall.
Hughes, who made the all-tournament team, led the Lady Bears in kills with 33 and digs with 43. Jeffries, who also made the all-tournament team, had 14 kills, 16 digs, and 53 assists. Also helping with offense was Marlowe with 16 kills and three service aces and Fletcher with 10 kills and nine digs.
