BAY MINETTE ? The Faulkner State Community College Lady Sun Chiefs closed their 2008 regular volleyball season with a rush, winning a pair of road matches.
Coach Ritchie Dulaney's squad beat Gadsden in Gadsden 25-19, 27-25, 25-23 Monday and then went to Pensacola on Tuesday and knocked off Pensacola Christian College 23-25, 25-19, 26-24, 14-25, 15-6.
The two wins moved the Lady Chief overall season record to 14-18 as they head to Muscle Shoals on Friday and Saturday for the state ACCC Women's Volleyball Championships at Northwest Shoals Community College.
In the win over Gadsden, Faulkner got good play from their freshman standouts in beating the Lady Cardinals.
Jessica Shelter led the offense with 13 kills.
Heather Nezat added eight kills with Meghan Wallace and Jennifer Fuller both delivering five kills apiece.
Setter McKinley Kennedy looked to be completely healthy again as she dished out 26 assists. Kennedy had been suffering lately from a foot injury.
Shani Gilreath, who was the Sun Chief setter when Kennedy was out of the lineup, led the back row as the freshman had a team high 12 digs.
Libero player Hannah Hicks pitched in with 10 digs for FSCC.
Shelter added eight digs and Wallace had six. Kennedy had five block shots at the net with Nezat adding three blocks.
Audra Oliver led Gadsden with eight kills while Leshea Stokes had 17 assists.
Shelter led the team against PCC on Tuesday as she had 16 kills this time.
Wallace, Fuller and Andrea McCall all had six kills apiece for Dulaney's squad.
Kennedy passed out 31 assists with Gilreath dishing out eight assists.
McCall had 16 digs, Hicks had 15 and Wallace and Kelsey Thomas had 11 digs each in the victory. Kennedy added nine digs.
Wallace and Fuller led the service game with three aces apiece. McCall, Hicks and Ja'Leesa Howard added two aces each.
