Eight Freshman to join FSCC volleyball team
BAY MINETTE, Alabama -- The Faulkner State Lady Sun Chief volleyball team opens its 2010 season soon and coach Ritchie Dulaney will have several newcomers on the squad.
Dulaney recently released a list of first-year players for FSCC and they will join six returning veterans and one transfer.
"We have a strong returning team core and coupled with this outstanding freshman class should provide us with a foundation for a good team," the Sun Chief coach said.
Eight freshmen will play this fall for Dulaney and Faulkner State.
Farrah Deese is a 5-foot-7 freshman outside hitter from Washington County High.
"Farrah is a hard-working athlete with a load of potential," Dulaney said. "She is expected to make the transition from high school and immediately help with depth in the outside hitting position."
Ashley Snow is a 6-foot middle/outside hitter from Leroy High. She made all-county last year and was on the all-state second team.
"Ashley has a ton of potential and a strong work ethic. She has been in the gym this summer working on her basics and will challenge for a starting position. She has a long reach and is very aggressive, a great combination for a middle hitter," Dulaney said.
Jamy Erwin is a 5-6 all-county and all-tournament player from Alma Bryant.
"She can play any position on the court and will be asked to contribute in all phases," Dulaney said. "She is working as an alternate setter, which will hopefully allow the team to run a 6-2 offense.
"She is extremely coachable and dedicated to the sport."
Melissa Zucher is a 5-4 graduate of nearby Spanish Fort High School.
"Melissa is a gifted and very hard-working athlete that will play the defensive specialist position for us," the Faulkner coach said.
Zucher has played several years of club ball.
"Her experience will be invaluable as she helps to control the defense on the back court," Dulaney said.
Former Mary G. Montgomery standout Courtney Parks is a 5-7 outside hitter. She made the 6A all-state second team last year and Dulaney said she is a strong all-around player. "I am extremely excited about Courtney and her ability to be an immediate threat for us. She is quick and jumps extremely well. We expect her to be a major contributor to the offense this fall."
Summer Stokley is a 5-11 middle hitter from Wakulla High in Tallahassee, Fla.
"Summer's desire to score and her overall strength are amazing," Dulaney said. "She is a very driven player and her presence on the court will make a great difference in the intensity of our team."
Adele Woodall is another big middle hitter, a 6-0 player from Guntersville High. Woodall was an all-state, all-county and area MVP for three years.
"Adele is a very strong middle hitter who should also contribute immediately," Dulaney said. "We are excited to have a player of her caliber on the team. She is a very calm player that just makes things happen. The middle is such a key position and we have several dominating players in that position this year."
Mercedez Lawrence is a 5-9 outside hitter from Dothan's Northview High.
"Mercedez has potential and is another player who will bring depth to our outside hitting positions," Dulaney added.
In addition to the incoming freshman class, Dulaney also has Caroline Price, a big 5-11 middle hitter transferring in from Southern Union Community College.
"Caroline was the 2009 ACCC (Alabama Community College Conference) Player of the Year and scored against us at will last year," Dulaney said. "It is so exciting to play with her this fall instead of against her. She is a tremendous volleyball player."
