The Randolph Leader By Matt Shelley Wednesday, October 29, 2008 The Southern Union volleyball team has made a big turnaround this season. After going 4-30 overall last year, the Lady Bison have mounted a 17-17 overall mark in 2008 and are looking forward to the state tournament in Muscle Shoals at Northwest Shoals Community College this Friday and Saturday. "We've been doing well overall," head coach Jenny Hayes said. "We've had some high moments and some low moments, but we've been getting better all season." The Lady Bison are 7-7 in the conference and could be seeded anywhere from forth to sixth in the upcoming tournament, depending on the results from Tuesday's slate of matches, which were unavailable at press time. Several key players have contributed to the success of Southern Union this season. Leading the team in aces this year has been Jesi Johnson, who has mounted 39 ace serves. Lisa Ogide has been a strong presence at the net, earning 357 kills on the season. Ogide also leads the team in blocks with 81. Heather Marlowe leads Southern Union in assists with 900 total on the year. Tara Vickery leads the Lady Bison in digs with 269 total this season. Hayes said the conference has been as competitive as ever this season and Southern Union hopes to finish strong in the state tournament. "Our conference is really tight this year," Hayes said. "Anybody can beat anybody on any day. We feel like we can go into state and do well this year."
