HANCEVILLE –Former Wallace State baseball player Zelous Wheeler was recently named the Florida State League Player of the Week for his accomplishments with the Brevard County Manatees from April 9-19.
Wheeler batted .417 (15-for-36) during the stretch with a homer, four doubles, 10 RBIs and a .611 slugging percentage as the team reeled off a five-game winning streak.
Wheeler, a Sylacuaga native, played for Wallace State during the 2006-07 seasons. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 19th round of the 2007 draft.
Brevard County, located in Viera, Fla., is the Single-A club of the parent Brewers. Through the Manatees’ first 13 games, Wheeler leads the team in batting average, hits, doubles and RBIs. The third baseman also ranks in the top five in the league in batting average, hits, doubles, RBIs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and extra-base hits.
During his sophomore season at Wallace State, Wheeler played 50 games at third base and finished with a batting average of .412 and a slugging percentage of .701. He added 73 hits, 10 homers, 19 doubles, 51 RBIs and scored 59 runs.
