STARKESVILLE, Ala. - The Wallace State-Hanceville track team earned six top five finishes and set many personal records at Mississippi State's Bulldog Invitational over the weekend. The Lions competed against six other schools at the meet including Mississippi State, Alcorn State, Bevill State, Memphis, Mississippi Valley State and South Eastern Missouri State.
Wallace State Coach Stan Narewski said he was not only pleased with the Lions' performance, but "We all enjoyed seeing Wallace State graduates running for the universities at the meet."
Thuom Mathiang and Michael Chapa recorded top performances in the 800-and 1,500-meter events. Mathiang finished second to Mississippi State's Golden Coachman, a Wallace State graduate, in the 800. Mathiang recorded
a time of 1:52.40 while Chapa came in fourth in 1:58.10. Chapa took the second place finish in the 1,500-meter run in 3:59.12 and Mathiang
finished in sixth with a run of 4:02.49. Both athletes had personal bests in the 1,500.
Antoine Fant ran the 110-meter hurdles in 15.02 seconds for a fifth place finish, and Glenn Fowler was eighth in a time of 21.31.
"Antoine's race in the hurdles has him ranked third on the NJCAA List," said Narewski. "Unfortunately, Glenn fell in that race. He is ranked second nationally in the intermediate hurdles.
Kevin Adams took tenth in the men's 400-meter dash with a sprint of 48.80 seconds.
Evan Lavin has also been strong all season in field events and finished in the top 10 in three events at Mississippi State. He took second place in the shot put with a throw of 15.92 meters. Lavin was also third in the hammer throw with a distance of 46.77 meters and seventh in the javelin throw after a toss of 52.28 meters. David Lowry hurled the javelin 51.45 meters for an eighth place finish.
The Lions' Jeremy Cline jumped to a fourth place finish in the pole vault with a personal best height of 4.42 meters.
"Ironically, Jeremy's clearance (of 14 feet, 6 inches) was probably a 16-foot vault, but the measurement is based on the height of the bar,"
said Narewski. "Good things are on the horizon for Jeremy."
Carltavious Bell took ninth in the long jump competition with a distance of 6.53 meters.
Tasheilra Jones finished eighth in the women's 400-meter dash with a personal best time of 1:01.08. She also recorded a personal best in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.90.
Whitney Henderson had personal bests in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, finishing with times of 13.57 and 28.25, respectively.
The track team will head to Florida Relay in Gainseville, Fla. on April 5-7. They will follow that meet with a trip to the Ole Miss Open in
Oxford, Miss.
