Tim Van Egmond - 1999
Tim Van Egmond graduated from East Coweta
high School in Senoia, Georgia, in 1987. He attended Southern Union State
Community College from 1987-1989. In 1989, Tim had eleven wins, one save and
only two loses. That year, Tim pitched 98 2/3 innings, struck out 105 batters,
and walked only 39 batters. He was one of the nation’s top leaders in the
strike-out category and also in the number-of-wins category. He helped Southern
Union win the division in 1989.
From Southern Union, Tim transferred to
Jacksonville State University. While there, Tim pitched 110 innings, gave up 80
hits, stuck out 146 batters, and ended the season with a 1.41 ERA. Tim played
an important role in leading the JSU tea to two consecutive National
Championships and was awarded the MVP for both the 1990 and the 1991 World
Series. He set a NCAA record for pitching the most consecutive post-season
innings without giving up a run.
After finishing at Jacksonville, Tim was
drafted by the Boston Red Sox and quickly moved up their organization. In 1992,
he earned the Ace of the Staff Award at Lynchburg and also pitched a no-hitter
that same year. While in Lynchburg, Tim led the team in wins (12-4), led the
league in innings pitched (174), and was second in the league in strike-outs
(140). In 1993, he again earned the Ace of the Staff Award, this time in AA New
Britain, and led the league in innings pitched (193 and strike-outs (163)/ In
1994, Tim was called up to the majors where he pitched until the strike
shortened the season. In June, 1996, he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers
organization where he pitched in triple-A until the again made it to the Majors
in July 1996.
Tim currently lives in Sparpsburg,
Georgia, during the off-season. He and his wife, Branndan, have a 17 month old
son, William Tate.
