Henry Finney - 1998
Henry Finney was born in Birmingham,
Alabama, where he attended Carver High School. He was an Alabama High School
athletic Association All-State performer in the Long Jump and the Triple Jump in
the spring of 1973.
In 1973 Finney signed a track scholarship
with Calhoun Community College. During his freshman and sophomore years he was
named as an All-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association in
the Long Jump and Triple events in both the winter and spring national
meets.
As a sophomore Finney was twice named as
the Most Valuable player in the national Junior College Athletic Association
National Track Meets. He first earned the honor in the Indoor competitions
during the winter and then at the spring event in May.
Finney holds a host of Warhawk track
records. He set the school indoor record in the Long Jump event of 23 feet, 4 ½
inches and the Triple Jump with hop, skip and jump of 49 feet, 7 ½ inches. In
the outdoor events he set a standard in the Long Jump of 25 feet, ½ inches. He
added a record on the Triple Jump with a 50 feet, 10 ¾ inches leap. Henry was
also a member of the record-holding Sprint medley team, which set a mark of
three minutes and 26 seconds.
Signing with Florida State University,
Finney continues to excel in the long jump and the Triple Jump for the Seminole
indoor and outdoor track teams. After completing his eligibility at Florida
State University, Henry returned to Birmingham. He enrolled at the University
of Alabama – Birmingham, where he attended for one year.
Finney is the Sales manager at Hoover
Toyota in Hoover. Married to the former Valerie Reeves of Birmingham, he is the
father of three children: Bruce (14), Callie (10), and Aaron (8). The Finneys
live in Northeastern area of Birmingham.
