Doug Key - 1993
Doug Key was born in a farm house in
Little Texas, Alabama, on April 26, 1942 to Clarence and Oleta Key. He attended
Eldridge Junior High School for 1948 to 1958 where he played for the great Mr.
Paul Sides. While at Eldridge, two Walker County Junior High Championships were
won with Doug Key being named All-County twice and captain of the 1958
undefeated team.
Doug graduated from Carbon Hill High
School in 1961. He earned nine letters; 3 in football, 3 in basketball, and 3 in
baseball.
He attended Florence State University
(Now the University of North Alabama) and received his B.S. Degree. He received
the M.A. from the University of South Alabama. While attending college he
earned four letters in basketball, led the Alabama Collegiate Conference in
scoring as a junior and senior and was the 3rd leading scorer in the
University of North Alabama’s history.
Doug coached high school for four years
and was twice elected both Area and Regional Coach of the Year. He won three
Area Titles, two Regional Titles, and was fourth in the state in
1968.
Coach Key was assistant coach at the
University of South Alabama for two years and head coach at Marion military
Institute for three years.
Doug has been head coach and athletic
director at Chattahoochee Valley Community College for the past eighteen years.
He was named Coach of the Year in the Central Division eight times and Coach of
the Year in Region 22 four times. His team won region championships in 1978,
1985, 1990, and 1992. In 1978 the team was 30-2 and fourth in the National
Final Poll. The 1993 was 29-1 and was ranked 4th in the Final
National Poll. Coached three at CVCC 1989-1990; men’s basketball, women’s
basketball, and women’s softball with all three going to Region Tournament
Competition. His overall records for men’s basketball – 441-204, women’s
basketball – 95-42, and softball - 95-80.
He is married to the former Cecilia
McGaugh of Nauvoo, Alabama. She is also working in the education field as a
special education teacher at Central Elementary School in Phenix City. Doug and
Cecilia have two lovely daughters, Kimberly Mathews and Amy key, both who are
Auburn graduates. Kim manages a computer company in Montgomery and Amy teaches
fifth grade at Phenix City Middle School.
