Jack Robertson - 1998
Robert Jackson “Jack” Robertson, Jr. a
native of bay Minette, came to Faulkner State as head basketball coach in 1973,
and the rest, as they say is history. Jack has brought distinction, class, and
honor to the Faulkner State basketball program.
During his tenure at Faulkner State, his
teams have qualified for the state championship nineteen times. Under his
leadership the men’s basketball has won the State Championship twice and been
runner-up once. They have participated in the National Junior College
Championship twice, placing sixth in 1991. Jack’s teams have been Southern
Division Champions nine times since 1981 and Tournament Champions
twice.
He has been named NJCAA Region XXII
Basketball Coach of the Year twice and Alabama College Coach of the Year by
Birmingham-Southern College. He has had 13 seasons where his teams won twenty
or more games. His overall win/loss record at Faulkner is 477-247. With Jack’s
help the College has been host to the Men’s State Tournament five times and
hosted the Women’s Tournament once. This is no small feat, when your team is
playing and participating in the tournament, you are coordinating a physical
education program, and also athletic director of a very competitive state of
sports teams. Jack has done all this with grace and good humor and his teams
have fared well at the same time. Over 145 former players have gone on to
four-year schools to play basketball.
Jack is a graduate of Baldwin County High
School where he won seven letters for the Tigers – two in football as a
quarterback and kicker, two in basketball, and three in baseball. He was named
as Athlete of the Year and served as President for the school’s top-ranked Key
Club. He then went onto Marion Military institute for two years where he was
captain of the baseball team and was named first-team All-Dixie Conference.
After graduation from the University of South Alabama and Troy State, Robertson
entered the coaching field and came to Faulkner State in 1973. He was appointed
Athletic Director in 1991 and Chairman of the Health, Physical Education and
Recreation Division in 1994. His most recent honor was to be named to the
Baldwin County High School Hall of Fame.
Jack has been the guiding force behind
the successful Media Day at Faulkner State. This annual event brings the
community, the media and freshman players in all sports together for a day of
fun activities and a chance to see what Faulkner State may look like in each
sport during the its season. Jack coordinates all aspects of the day’s
events.
He is married to the former Patsy Smith
and they have three children: Robby, Melanee, and Renee.
