Dwight Stone - 1994
Dwight Stone was born on January 28,
1964, in Florala, Alabama, and later graduated from Florala High School where he
starred on the gridiron. Upon completion of high school Dwight accepted a
football scholarship to Marion Military Institute (MMI).
Dwight played at Marion under Head Coach
Bubba Hooker in 1983 and 1984. In his freshman year and three touchdowns and
caught eight passes for 63 yards.
Then in his sophomore year, 1984, Dwight
produced some remarkable statistics. He carried the ball 84 times for 597 yards,
eight TD’s and two extra points while also catching the ball 11 times for 107
yards, one touchdown, and four extra points. Dwight’s 60 points set a school
single season record.
In two years at MMI Dwight touched the
ball 180 times and produced 1,121 total yards for an average of 6.2 yards per
attempt. In addition, he tallied 12 TD’s and six EP’s while leading MMI to a
record of 13 and 4.
While his athletic accomplishments are
truly noteworthy, he was also a solid, dependable student and a member of the
ROTC program.
For the next two years Dwight attended
Middle Tennessee State University where, as a junior, he rushed 111 times for
679 yards and 13 touchdowns. The following year, 1986, Dwight compiled even more
impressive statistics. He carried the ball 219 times for 1,026 yards and 13
TD’s. For his gridiron accomplishments, Dwight was named the Ohio Valley
All-Conference Football Team.
In two years at the MTSU, Dwight produced
1, 705 yards on 330 carries for an average of 5.2 yards per rush. He scored a
total of 26 touchdowns and had seven 100-yard games. He still ranks among the
top 10 in single season scoring, career scoring, single season rushing and
career rushing at Middle Tennessee.
Since being acquired by the Pittsburgh
Steelers as a rookie free agent in 1987, Dwight has taken full advantage of his
professional football opportunities. Dwight came to the Steelers as a running
back but switched to wide receiver in 1989. Actually, Dwight has had a very
versatile seven-year career- Running back, wide receiver, punting teams, punt
return teams, kickoff teams, and kickoff return teams. Dwight is a player with a
4.25 speed for 40 yards and the Steelers have definitely utilized that
speed.
Prior to the 1993 season Dwight was
credited with 104 catches for 1,792 (17.2 avg.) and 10 TD’s, rushed 82 times for
429 yards (5.2 avg.) and returned 87 kickoffs for 1,736 (19.9 avg.) and one TD
(a return of 92 yards). His total yardage is 3,957 yards on 273 tries for an
average of 14.5 yards. As a member of the special teams, Dwight has been
credited with 45 tackles and one recovered fumble.
This year was one of Dwight’s finest. His
efforts were instrumental in the Steelers making the playoffs for the third time
since he joined the team. Dwight contributed 876 all-purpose yards to the
Steelers 1993 successful season. He caught 41 passes (a career high) for 587
yards and two touchdowns, ran 12 times for 121 yards and one TD, and returned 11
kickoffs for 168 yards. In the final analysis, Stone averaged 13.7 yards every
time he touched the ball.
In the 1993 playoff game, Dwight caught
three passes for 36 yards, ran three times for 11 yards, and returned one
kickoff for 18 yards. In his two previous playoff games (1989 and 1992), Dwight
caught four passes for 27 yards, rushed twice for 18 yards, and returned four
kickoffs for 79 yards.
In addition to his gridiron exploits,
Dwight has always been extremely active in his community with the Blue Cross
Caring Team, and he frequently speaks to school and church groups.
Stone epitomizes the successful student
athlete. He is a college graduate, he is a former college star athlete, he is a
sever-year National Football League veteran, he is the starting wide receiver
for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he is currently working as an intern for the
Federal Bureau of Investigation. Dwight Stone is a remarkable young man with
impressive credentials.
