H. Robert
Shuttleworth - 2004
Robert (Bob) Shuttleworth was one of the
founding fathers of the Alabama Junior and Community College Conference. In
1966 he became the first coach of the John C. Calhoun Warhawks, one year before
they joined the league in its first year of existence. He retired in 1995 with
a career coaching record of 421 victories, 260 losses, and six 20 win seasons
included in the 19 teams appearing in the Alabama JUCO state/regional
tournament. His career coaching record ranks him fifth in total basketball
victories among the AJCCC coaching ranks.
Shuttleworth reached the pinnacle of his
career in 1982 when his team won the Alabama Junior & Community College
Conference tournament and qualified for the National Junior College Athletic
Association Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas. Five of his squads earned a
national ranking during his career.
Taking the position of basketball coach
and instructor in the Physical Education Department in 1966, Shuttleworth
started the basketball program at the newly founded John C. Calhoun State
Technical Junior College. He coached the basketball team for three years prior
to assuming the duties as full-time Athletic Director and Physical Education
Division Chairman. Three years later he returned to the basketball court and
coached until his retirement.
A stickler for the idea that ?academics
come before athletics,? Shuttleworth saw more than 80 percent of his players
advance to senior colleges. The majority of those players earned basketball
scholarships.
Shuttleworth began his coaching career in
1954 at Hopewell High School, in Ohio, after serving in the U.S. Army at Fort
Jackson, South Carolina. He served as the high school basketball coach and
administrator before accepting the position as the assistant basketball coach,
head track and cross country coach, and intramural director at Lambuth College
in Jackson, Tennessee. During his tenure at Lambuth College, he earned his
Master?s Degree in Physical Education at Memphis State University. While at
John C. Calhoun he worked towards his doctorate at the University of Alabama
passing his prelims for the degree in 1969. Shuttleworth was also selected for
the Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame in Alabama on June 11,
2004.
Married to the former Marie Dowdy of
Columbia, South Carolina, (Deceased in 2003) Shuttleworth is the father of two
children, Bobbie Faye and Matt. The Shuttleworth?s also have three
granddaughters and one great grandson.
