Alabama is growing and moving forward at an accelerated pace. Education forms a strong foundation and plays a critical role in the success of our state and our nation. The student-athletes who represent the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) have shown through their athletic talents and commitment to academic excellence that we are indeed on the right path.
An analysis of information submitted by ACCC member colleges shows that student-athletes excel in the classroom as well as in their chosen sport. This analysis shows that the average overall grade point average of our student-athletes is 2.97. Of the 95 teams that submitted information, 40 percent maintained an average GPA of a 3.0 or better, 92.6 percent of the teams maintained an average GPA of 2.5 or better and all had a GPA of 2.34 or higher. These are impressive performance indicators when you consider that students are only required to maintain a 2.0 GPA to meet National and ACCC eligibility standards. This is proof of the hard-working, successful student-athletes currently participating in the ACCC.
More than 1900 students, most of whom are Alabamians, received athletic scholarships at the twenty community colleges that make up the Alabama Community College Conference, according to the Alabama College System Chancellor’s Annual Report for 2005. The number of nationally recognized Academic All-Americans in the conference nearly doubled, with 42 student- athletes honored in 2005.
The ACCC is committed to educating students and giving them structure on and off the field. For most community college athletes, sports participation helps them gain the confidence and self-discipline needed to reach their educational and career goals.
The Alabama Community College Conference is proud of each team and wants to encourage each and every student-athlete to strive for excellence and surpass the academic and athletic standards set for them.
